Why This State Is Complex

West Virginia's LMFT pathway mirrors the LPC track structurally (3,000 hours, 1:20 supervision ratio, 24-month calendar, quarterly reporting) but adds a couples/families sub-requirement: at least 50% of your 1,500 direct hours (750 minimum) must involve couples or families. Combined with the 1,500-hour annual cap and Board pre-approval requirements, this track requires careful planning to balance caseload composition alongside hour and calendar tracking.

3,000 total supervised hours (master's) or 1,500 hours (doctoral) with at least 50% in direct client contact
At least 50% of direct client hours must involve couples or families — minimum 750 hours with couples/families for master's-level
150 hours of individual supervision at a 1:20 ratio — supervisor may be LMFT, LPC, or other qualified professional with 5+ years experience
Board credits a maximum of 1,500 hours per calendar year toward the requirement
Minimum 24 months calendar time (master's) or 12 months (doctoral)

Quarterly supervision logs and mid-point/final supervisor assessments required

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Not tracking couples/family hours separately from individual hours — at least 750 of your 1,500 direct hours must be with couples or families, and falling short means additional time
Exceeding the 1,500-hour annual cap — same limitation as the LPC track; full-time workers will hit the cap around month 9
Beginning supervised practice before Board approval of the supervision agreement — hours before approval may not count
Assuming any licensed therapist qualifies as supervisor — your supervisor must have 5+ years therapy/counseling experience and MFT supervision training or AAMFT Approved Supervisor status
Missing the provisional license renewal deadline at 36 months — must apply for the 24-month extension before expiration
