Why This State Is Complex

Washington's LMHC pathway is straightforward with no phase-based hour reductions. The flat 1,200-hour direct minimum and 100-hour supervision requirement are clear and consistent throughout your supervision period. However, CACREP accreditation can significantly reduce your total hours (50-hour supervision + 500-hour experience credit), making the path faster for graduates of CACREP-accredited programs.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Choosing a supervisor without verifying they meet Washington's 2-year minimum experience requirement and have completed 15 CE hours in supervision
Not documenting supervision hours properly; detailed records must be maintained and supervisor must verify all hours on final application
Assuming CACREP accreditation is required; while preferred, non-CACREP programs are permitted but may require additional coursework review for equivalency
Mixing indirect supervision hours with direct supervision; all 100 hours should be face-to-face (or clear telehealth video) with proper clinical engagement
Delaying national exam registration; applicants can take NCE or NCMHCE at any point, but results must be sent to DOH before full licensure application
Not maintaining annual LMHCA renewal; the associate license expires on your birthday each year and can only be renewed 6 times (up to 6 years max as associate)
