Why This State Is Complex

Texas uses a single-phase supervised experience model with no buyback or hour reduction credits. The pathway is straightforward — 3,000 hours over at least 18 months — but the hard 60-month expiration on the LPC-Associate license and the absence of any reciprocity create pressure to complete on time. The monthly supervision requirement (4 hours/month) rather than a total hour count is somewhat unusual and requires consistent tracking.

Key Requirements at a Glance

Complete 3,000 total supervised hours with a minimum of 1,500 direct client contact hours
Minimum 18 months of supervised experience — no shortcuts regardless of degree level
LPC-Associate license expires after 60 months and cannot be renewed
Receive at least 4 hours of supervision per month from a Board-approved LPC-S
Maximum of 2 Board-approved supervisors at any one time
Pass either the NCE or NCMHCE before applying for LPC-Associate status
Pass the Texas Jurisprudence Exam within 6 months of application and again at each renewal
Supervisory Agreement Form must be filed with BHEC before any hours count

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Starting to count hours before the LPC-Associate license is officially issued — pre-license hours do NOT count
Letting the 60-month LPC-Associate license expire before completing all 3,000 hours
Not filing the Supervisory Agreement Form with BHEC before beginning supervision
Failing to maintain at least 4 hours of supervision per month — gaps may invalidate hours during that period
Assuming out-of-state LPC credentials transfer to Texas — Texas has NO reciprocity for counselors
Forgetting that the Jurisprudence Exam must be retaken at every license renewal, not just initially
