Why This State Is Complex

Tennessee's LPC/MHSP track is significantly more demanding than basic LPC due to the 3,000-hour requirement split between direct client contact (1,500) and clinical-based work (1,500), plus stricter supervision requirements with an MHSP-specific supervisor requirement. You must pass three exams (NCE, NCMHCE, and Jurisprudence) and maintain a clinical setting that offers mental health diagnosis and treatment services. The 75-hour LPC/MHSP supervisor minimum adds complexity to finding qualified supervisors.

Key Requirements at a Glance

Master's degree with 60+ graduate hours in counseling plus 9 graduate hours in diagnosis, treatment, appraisal, and assessment of mental disorders
500-hour supervised practicum/internship (300 hours in clinical agency setting); these hours do NOT count toward 3000-hour requirement
3,000 post-master's supervised clinical hours: 1,500 direct client contact and 1,500 clinical-based (documentation, treatment planning, supervision, case review)
Minimum 10 hours per week clinical counseling work; completion between 2–4 years from start
150 total supervision hours: minimum 100 individual (one-to-one) and maximum 50 group (with 4 or fewer supervisees)
CRITICAL: At least 75 of the 150 supervision hours must be conducted by a supervisor holding LPC/MHSP license; remaining 75 may be LCSW, LMFT, psychologist, or psychiatrist
Clinical setting must offer mental health diagnosis and treatment services; school-based settings do NOT meet this requirement
Pass National Counselor Examination (NCE) to obtain temporary license
Reach 1,500 direct client contact hours and pass National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE)
Pass Tennessee Jurisprudence Exam (TJEPC)
Submit comprehensive application with hour verification, supervision logs, and documentation of 9 semester hours in diagnosis/treatment coursework

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Failing to secure an LPC/MHSP supervisor early: 75 of 150 supervision hours MUST come from an LPC/MHSP; standard LPC, LMFT, or LCSW supervisors cannot provide these hours. Verify supervisor status before starting.
Working in a non-clinical setting (e.g., school, coaching, general agency): the clinical setting must offer mental health diagnosis and treatment services. Settings that do not allow you to observe/counsel clients with DSM diagnoses do NOT meet requirements.
Mixing direct and indirect hours incorrectly: you need 1,500 direct (client contact) and 1,500 clinical-based, not total hours. Track separately and ensure 1,500 are truly direct client sessions.
Procrastinating on NCMHCE: this exam must be passed after reaching 1,500 direct client contact hours but before finalizing licensure. Take it promptly to avoid delays.
Assuming you can use basic LPC supervisor for the entire 150 hours: remember, 75 MUST be LPC/MHSP. Document which hours are provided by whom.
Neglecting the 9-semester-hour requirement in diagnosis/treatment: if not completed in master's program, must be completed post-graduate before or during supervised practice.
Not documenting the distinction between direct and indirect hours: use detailed hour logs that clearly mark direct client contact vs. clinical-based work; audits are common.
