Why This State Is Complex

South Carolina's LPC-A pathway has a below-average total hour requirement (1,500 vs. the 3,000+ required in many other states), but it includes a few important nuances. Applications are processed through a private contractor (CCE), not the Board directly, which adds a processing step many applicants don't expect. Additionally, the scope of practice at the LPC-A level is determined by the content of your graduate practicum — not which exam you took — which can surprise candidates who passed the NCMHCE expecting broader clinical scope.

Key Requirements at a Glance

1,500 total post-master's hours over a minimum of 24 months, all accrued after LPC-A licensure is issued
1,380 hours must be direct client contact; 120 hours must be documented supervision
Of the 120 supervision hours, at least 60 must be individual or triadic (not group) supervision
Supervisor must be a SC Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPCS) or Board-approved Qualified Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (QLMHP)
A Board-approved Plan for Clinical Supervision must be on file with the Board BEFORE you see your first client
Applications are submitted to CCE (Center for Credentialing and Education), a private contractor — not directly to the SC Board
NCE or NCMHCE must be passed before the LPC-A license is issued
License renews every 2 years (deadline: August 31 of even years); 40 CE hours required, including 6 ethics and 25 clinical content hours

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Starting to see clients before the supervision plan is approved by the Board — this is a violation even if you have your LPC-A license in hand
Counting hours accrued before the LPC-A license was officially issued — only post-license hours are countable
Assuming any licensed LPC can be your supervisor — supervisors must hold the LPCS designation or be a Board-approved QLMHP on the Board's published list
Letting the 2-year LPC-A license expire without applying for an extension — apply for the extension BEFORE it expires
Expecting passing the NCMHCE to automatically grant authority to treat serious mental health conditions — scope of practice is determined by your graduate practicum content, not your exam choice
Sending your application to the SC Board directly — initial applications go to CCE, and applicants must receive CCE approval before taking the NBCC exam
