Rhode Island LCSW to Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) Requirements

Everything you need to know about completing your 3,000 supervised clinical social work hours in Rhode Island.

Total Hours

3,000

Calendar Minimum

24 months (2 years)

Supervision

100

Direct Hours Floor

1,500 direct client contact hours

Why This State Is Complex

Rhode Island's LICSW pathway has prescriptive supervision mandates: minimum 2 hours every 2 weeks plus 1 hour per 20 direct client hours, with at least 75% individual supervision. The 72-month ceiling creates urgency — if hours aren't completed within 6 years of starting, you must restart accumulation. Supervisors must be LICSW specifically (no other credential qualifies), which limits the available supervisor pool.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Using a supervisor who holds LCSW but not LICSW — only LICSW-credentialed supervisors qualify for the LICSW track
Not meeting the dual supervision frequency requirement (both the 2 hours/2 weeks AND the 1:20 ratio must be satisfied simultaneously)
Exceeding the 72-month (6-year) ceiling — if you don't complete hours within 6 years, you must restart accumulation entirely
Assuming all social work hours count as direct contact — only 1,500 of the 3,000 can be indirect (case management, documentation, consultation)
Having your supervisor be a relative, romantic partner, or employer — Rhode Island explicitly prohibits these relationships
Not tracking the 3 mandatory CE hours in cross-cultural practice/oppression alleviation required for renewal
