What is a Proposed Plan of Supervision?

A formal document prepared and submitted by your supervisor to the Professional Counselor Examiners Committee (PCEC) before you begin providing counseling services. It outlines the supervision structure, frequency, modalities, and qualifications. The Plan must be on file with PCEC before any hours accrue. If you change supervisors or worksites, a new Plan must be submitted.

Why are group supervision hours so limited?

New Jersey caps group supervision at 10 hours per year (20% of the 50-hour annual requirement) with a maximum group size of 6 supervisees. The remaining 40 hours (80%) must be individual, one-on-one supervision at a minimum frequency of 1 hour per week. This emphasis on individual supervision reflects New Jersey's focus on close supervisory oversight.

Can I use pre-master's practicum/internship hours?

Up to 1 year of pre-master's practicum or internship experience may count toward the total requirement if it was not used to satisfy core graduate course requirements. This must be documented and submitted with your LPC application. It does not reduce the minimum calendar time (3 years or 2 years) required.

Is New Jersey part of the Counseling Compact?

Yes, New Jersey enacted Counseling Compact legislation in January 2024. However, the compact is not yet operational as of March 2026.
