Why This State Is Complex

New Jersey's LPC pathway has one of the highest hour requirements nationally at 4,500 hours over 3 years minimum (reducible to 3,000/2 years with 90+ graduate credits). The annual caps (1,500 hours/year, 30 hours/week, 125 hours/month) prevent backloading. Supervision requires 80% individual, with a Plan of Supervision submitted to the committee before counseling begins. A new Plan is required for every supervisor or worksite change. The LAC credential itself has no post-master's hour requirement — hours are accumulated toward LPC.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Exceeding the annual cap of 1,500 hours — you cannot work more than 30 hours/week or 125 hours/month toward the requirement, even in a full-time clinical position
Not submitting the Plan of Supervision before beginning counseling — hours logged before PCEC receives the Plan do not count
Forgetting to file a new Plan when changing worksites or supervisors — every change requires a new Plan
Not understanding the alternative pathway: with 90+ total graduate credits (60 master's + 30 additional), the requirement drops to 3,000 hours over 2 years
Exceeding 6 years from LAC licensure date — all hours must be completed within 6 years of receiving the LAC
Counting group supervision beyond the 10-hour annual cap or having groups larger than 6
