Why This State Is Complex

New Jersey's LBA licensure is straightforward: hold current BACB BCBA or BCBA-D certification and pass the 25-question New Jersey Jurisprudence Examination. No additional state-imposed supervised hours, fieldwork, or post-licensure supervision is required. The BACB fieldwork (1,500-2,000 hours) completed for national certification satisfies all experiential requirements. The State Board of Applied Behavior Analyst Examiners (SBAE) began accepting applications in October 2025.

Key Requirements at a Glance

Master's or Doctorate from regionally accredited institution in behavior analysis or related discipline
Current BACB BCBA or BCBA-D certification at time of application
Pass New Jersey Jurisprudence Examination (25 questions on N.J.A.C. 13:42B)
Criminal background check required
Application fee approximately $150; renewal approximately $200 biennially

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Applying before BACB certification is active — you must hold current BCBA or BCBA-D at the time of application, not just have passed the exam
Not studying for the NJ Jurisprudence Exam — while it's only 25 questions, it specifically tests knowledge of N.J.A.C. 13:42B (state regulations), not general ABA knowledge
Assuming LBA allows diagnosis of psychiatric disorders — LBA scope is limited to behavior analysis; it does not include psychiatric diagnosis or prescribing
Not maintaining BACB certification — if BACB certification lapses, the NJ LBA license cannot be renewed
