Why This State Is Complex

New Hampshire's LICSW pathway mirrors the LCMHC structure but with stricter supervisor requirements and no interstate compact flexibility. Like LCMHC, candidates must accrue 3,000 hours in 2–5 years with weekly in-person individual supervision, Board pre-approval of supervision agreements, and mandatory supervisor credentials (45-hour course, 12 CEUs in supervision). The added complexity: New Hampshire is NOT a member of the Social Work Licensure Compact, so LICSW licensees cannot practice across state lines via compact (unlike LCMHC licensees with Counseling Compact access). Additionally, LICSW supervisors MUST be LICSW—no other mental health license qualifies—making it slightly harder to find eligible supervisors. However, a special provision allows out-of-state LICSW holders with 5+ years of continuous licensure to apply for New Hampshire licensure without the 3,000-hour requirement.

Board-approved 'Candidate for Licensure: Supervision Agreement' filed and approved before hours accrue
Supervisor must be LICSW licensed in New Hampshire for 2+ years with clinical supervision training (45-hour graduate course or 25-hour board-approved program) and 12 CEUs in clinical supervision
Pass the ASWB Clinical Exam (Association of Social Work Boards) after Board approval of Supervision Agreement and beginning of supervised practice
Complete 'Supervisor Confirmation of Clinical Experience' form signed and sealed by supervisor upon completion of 3,000 hours

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Confusing LICSW with LMSW: New Hampshire does NOT offer an intermediate LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker) requiring supervised practice. Some states have LMSW as a prerequisite to LICSW; in New Hampshire, there is only LICSW. You go directly from post-MSW candidacy to LICSW licensure—no LMSW intermediate step.
Selecting a non-LICSW supervisor: Unlike LCMHC candidates (whose supervisors can be LCMHC OR LICSW), LICSW candidates MUST have an LICSW supervisor. Selecting a supervisor who is LCMHC, LMFT, or psychologist will result in supervision agreement denial. Verify your supervisor is LICSW before submitting.
Not accounting for New Hampshire's lack of Social Work Compact participation: LICSW licenses from other states do not automatically grant practice privileges in New Hampshire via compact (unlike the Counseling Compact for LCMHC). If you plan to practice across multiple states, this is a significant limitation compared to LCMHC.
Attempting telehealth supervision: Same as LCMHC—in-person supervision only. No virtual meetings permitted by rule.
Delaying background check processing: New Hampshire requires a Criminal Offender Record Report (CORR) from ALL states where you've lived in the past 5 years as part of your final application. If you've lived in multiple states, request these early; some states take weeks to respond.
Forgetting the 12 CEUs in clinical supervision for your supervisor: Your supervisor must complete 12 CEUs in clinical supervision (not just any supervision training)—ensure your supervisor has formal Category A-approved training before the Supervision Agreement is filed, or the Board will request proof and delay approval.
