Why This State Is Complex

Colorado’s LPCC pathway is moderately complex due to strict supervisor qualifications (3 years/3,000 hours plus formal supervision training as of 2021) and the requirement to pass both Colorado jurisprudence and national exams. No hour reductions are available, so candidates must complete the full 2,000-hour commitment. The 3-3-4 supervisor rule tightened requirements in 2021, making supervisor availability and qualification a critical planning factor.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Misunderstanding the 3-3-4 Rule: Supervisors must have 3 years OR 3,000 hours PLUS formal supervision training. Many candidates try to use supervisors who meet experience but lack required training.
Starting hours before LPCC registration: Hours only count after officially registering as LPCC with the board. Informal supervision beforehand doesn’t count.
Assuming exam flexibility: No reductions for passing NCMHCE instead of NCE, earning a doctorate, or other credentials. All 2,000 hours and 24-month calendar are mandatory.
Supervisor availability: Qualified supervisors (LPC with proper training, or approved non-LPC with credentials) are critical. Research supervisor availability and training status before starting.
Documentation delays: The Post-Degree Experience and Supervision Form requires supervisor signature and is submitted once upon completion. Lack of clear hour documentation can delay final application processing.
License expiration cycles: Both LPCC and LPC licenses expire August 31 of odd-numbered years. Track renewal deadlines to avoid gaps in practice.
